Second-Year Spanish: Emphasis on Service Learning, Third Quarter

Continuation of SPANLANG 12. Barriers and Bridges: Applied Spanish for Access to Community Resourses. Sequence integrating community- engaged learning, culture and language with emphasis on developing advanced proficiency in oral and written discourse. Targeted functional abilities include presentational and socioculturally appropriate language in formal and informal, community and professional contexts. SL content focuses on immersion in Spanish-speaking community settings through collaboration with local organizations working with Latino and immigrant communities. Students dedicate an average of two hours per week to structured service-learning activities. In collaboration with community partners, they apply their Spanish-language skills to initiatives designed to expand access to resources, services, rights, and opportunities. Projects may focus on health, housing, legal and social services, civic participation, and access to linguistically appropriate information and services. Activities may include engaging directly with Latino and immigrant communities through community education, health promotion, and nonpartisan civic outreach; supporting resource navigation and access to reliable information and services; and collaborating on Spanish-language materials, research, and program development. Partnerships and projects may vary from quarter to quarter.nThe course is conducted entirely in Spanish. This is a Cardinal Course certified by the Haas Center for Public Service and fulfills the language requirement for the International Relations major.n
