Stanford students experience life-changing internships in Cambodia

As part of the Global studies internship program, students spent the summer working for Stanford's WSD Handa Center for Human Rights and International Justice at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. The Handa Center’s trial monitoring program at the ECCC provides accountability to international legal standards as well as an objective historical record of the court’s activities for researchers, legal experts and the lay public, both in Cambodia and around the world. The ECCC was established in 2003 to try the senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge for crimes committed during their reign from 1975 to 1979, when about 2 million people are believed to have died from starvation, torture, execution and forced labor.
