This week's proceedings marked the beginning of the second segment of trial 1 (Case 002/1 segment 2), concerning the administrative and communication structures of the Democratic Kampuchea regime. In lieu of requiring Parties to file written submissions, the Trial Chamber devoted a substantial amount of time to hearing the Parties’ arguments on the admissibility of documents. The Chamber also heard arguments on issues relating to the right of the Accused to be physically present in court during the proceedings, regardless of the option to participate remotely at the holding cell. Another issue discussed this week was the propriety of hearing an important expert witness, Professor Ben Kiernan via video link, instead of summoning him to appear in court.
