Pantea Javidan

Research Fellow

Dr. Pantea Javidan, JD, PhD, is a faculty member of the Human Rights in Trauma Mental Health Program at Stanford University in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Dr. Javidan has unique interdisciplinary expertise spanning sociology, law, and trauma mental health, with a focus on the systemic challenges and inequities faced by marginalized communities. Her scholarship is rooted in social inequalities, human trafficking, and the evolving complexities of migration and refugee crises, notably at critical junctures like the US-Mexico border. Since the pandemic era, her work adapted to addressing the implications of government non-interventionism, climate change, and state violence, reflecting a deep commitment to understanding and mitigating the collective trauma induced by these crises.

Dr. Javidan’s pioneering research includes publications advancing the integration of trauma-informed methods within justice systems, examining the psychosocial impacts of international tribunals, and advocating for the use of an ecological model to understand human rights and trauma mental health. This body of work notably informs transitional justice initiatives, underscoring Dr. Javidan’s contributions to the fields of human rights.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Dr. Javidan has an extensive record of community-based experience, demonstrating her commitment to translating research into action. This includes her leadership role at a community mental health clinic serving survivors of severe trauma and her years as a civil rights lawyer for people with disabilities, children & youth, refugees, and survivors of domestic violence, reflecting a practical application of her research to support vulnerable populations directly.

Dr. Javidan contributes to academic and practical understanding of human rights and trauma mental health and helps to equip a new generation of leaders with the critical knowledge and skills necessary to advocate for and protect human dignity and rights globally, fostering an environment of critical inquiry and international justice.
