Dr. Chiara Lepora Analyzes the Ethics of Humanitarian Field Work

Since a word like “humanitarian” is used so often throughout a service-minded institution like Stanford University, it is crucial to examine and contemplate its concrete meaning. Participation in humanitarian action should consider and grapple with related ethical questions and dilemmas. Too often the meaning of “humanitarian” may become too abstract or obscured by its broad application or instances of misuse. Dr. Chiara Lepora’s lecture on her “Radical View on Humanitarian Ethics” provided a welcome interpretation of the term’s precise meaning and applicability, developed through her extensive experience as a practitioner and scholar.
