Managing the Spread of Fake News and Misinformation: What are the roles of Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, and Google?

Do viral fake news stories outperform real news on social media and Google search platforms? This discussion offers answers. A Stanford Law and Policy Lab research team, working closely with the Hewlett Foundation Madison Initiative, explores the roles of social media and search platforms in the spread of fake news and misinformation. The research examines the prevalence and consequences of fake news and misinformation for democratic institutions, and highlights recent actions across online intermediary platforms to enhance public access to accurate news sources and information.
