The Human Rights Dimension of Business and Technology

Please join Human Rights Watch Silicon Valley for a reception and riveting conversation on The Human Rights Dimension of Business and Technology with Human Rights Watch’s Deputy Executive Director, Nic Dawes, and Director of Business and Human Rights, Arvind Ganesan. Innovative technologies hold transformative potential for Human Rights Watch to tackle the major human rights problems of our time—armed conflict, forced displacement, environmental devastation, poverty, inequality, and discrimination. Using technology to help solve the hardest problems in the world will enable us to leverage our scale and experience to advance the global movement for justice. At the same time, new technologies also threaten fundamental freedoms and economic rights. Artificial intelligence enables mass surveillance. Algorithm-based decisions in police stations, courthouses and workplaces reproduce old forms of discrimination in new ways. Weapons could soon operate without human control. Digitized misinformation spreads from capitols around the world stoking fear and demonizing minorities.Human Right Watch is positioned to make a difference. Globally, HRW is working to ensure technology companies respect human rights and develop accountable and transparent practices through engaging with social media companies, pushing for government regulation of internet and social media platforms, and establishing industry guidelines on free expression and privacy.

Remarks will begin promptly at 6:45 pm, followed by a Q&A after the discussion. On-site parking and heavy hors d’oeuvres will be provided.
