Companies, Consumers, and the State: Defining Private Industry's Obligation to Protect Privacy

Consumers expect companies to respect the right to privacy. This means respecting the privacy of users by providing clear, accessible information about how personal data is used, rather than unintelligible terms and conditions. This means companies that handle data should not hand over this information to governments without a proper judicial order. This means companies should adopt strong encryption standards to protect personal data and be transparent about their security practices. Salil Shetty will engage these issues, among others, through the lens of the right to privacy.
